Food and Drugs Administration (FDA), Uttarakhand has been constituted on May 30, 2019 by Uttarakhand Government to effectively implement various Food Safety and Drugs Control laws e.g. Food Safety and Standards Act 2006, Drugs and Cosmetics Act 1940 and Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985. FDA Uttarakhand is headed by Food Safety and Drug Commissioner, and has its headquarter at Office of Director General, Medical Health and Family welfare, Danda Lakhond, Sahastradhara Road, Dehradun, Uttarakhand.
FDA had responsibility of ensuring the availability of safe and hygienic food and to ensure that the drugs and cosmetics sold in Uttarakhand are safe, effective and confirm to quality standards. To achieve above objectives FDA performs following main activities
Food Safety Wing

Licensing and registration of Food business operators (all kinds of food establishments like hawker, street food vendors, petty manufacturers, retailers, wholesalers, distributors, manufactures, hotels, restaurants etc. ) in Uttarakhand.

Inspection of Food establishment to ensure compliance to Food Safety and Standards Act 2006 its rules and regulation.

Sampling of Food items and testing by laboratory to check standards and take necessary legal action in case of non-compliance to prescribed standards.

To implement various initiatives of FSSAI like Eat Right India, FoSTaC , Safe and Nutritious Food, Food Fortification, Food Safety on Wheels and Clean Street Food Hub etc.

Information, education and Communication (IEC) activities to spread public awareness regarding food safety related laws, initiative and program.

To file cases in various courts as per provisions of related laws and to ensure that the offenders are fined/ punished by the courts as per their offence/non-compliance.
Drug Control Wing

Licensing and registration of Drug business operators in Uttarakhand.

To issue license for medicine and medical equipment manufacturing establishments.

Inspection of Drug establishment to ensure compliance to Drugs Control Acts e.g. Food Safety and Standards Act 2006, Drugs and Cosmetics Act 1940 and Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985.

Testing Laboratory
State Food and Drug Testing Laboratory, Rudrapur, Udhamsingh Nagar
Department has established State Food and Drug Testing Laboratory at Rudrapur, District Udhamsingh Nagar. Samples collected by officers of Food Safety and Drug Control wings are received and tested at this lab. To increase testing capacity of department and reduce burden from present lab, one additional lab is being established at Dehradun.
Vigilance Wing
As enforcement activities of the department require support of the police department and intelligence inputs, a vigilance wing has been created under an officer of rank of Deputy SP deputed from police department, to support officers with intelligence inputs and provide security at the time of raids and other enforcement activities as and when required or directed by Food Safety and Drug commissioner.
